06:08 pm - Final Announcement
This is it - I'm leaving LJ for the time being (as soon as I work out how to do it ;-)). I might come back some day, but for now, I'll be gone for good in a little while.

I'm gonna miss you, friends! *waves at nevanoon and authur* But I'm sure we'll find some alternative ways of communication ... :-)

Exit Second Troy.

10:00 am - It's settled.
This is where I'll be residing from this autumn on:

Göttingen, Lower Saxony )

Never been there before, but it looks rather cute. And of course the reason I'm going there is more than valid, as I'm going to study with two of my favourite lecturers in the world and earn my degree in Philosophy there. Berlin will have to wait, I'm afraid ...

Strange. My LJ's back to normal. Maybe someone at Maintenance read my last entry? ;-)

RL's been keeping me so busy I didn't even find the time to complain about it. And it ain't over yet. I've finally decided to move out of my appartment (wise choice), so I'm room hunting at the moment. The trial against my neighbour was on Thursday and was abandoned because of pettiness (don't know about the fitting legal term, couldn't find it on the net), which is fine by me, as it reduces the danger of me being the object of still more aggression from the part of my neighbour(s) (one of his witnesses lives in the same building, it's a truly nightmarish scenario). I'm still not sleeping well, but it'll pass.

I know, somewhere there's a great appartment for next to nothing, with trees and horses and lots of nice people in the vicinity, just for me. :-)

Gaaaaaaaaaah! They changed the layout of my LJ without asking me!!! My "Friends"-bar is now on the right-hand side instead of the left!!!

*shakes head in disbelief*

I don't do change well. ;-)

10:11 am - Why "Brokeback Mountain" fanfic isn't slash
Some more or less random musings that have been irking me ever since I heard of the movie:

I just stumbled over a "Brokeback Mountain" Slash Community, and thought it was rather oddly named. How can you slash characters that are already gay? The same problem hit me when I heard of "The Sentinel" RPS, where two of the male actors were evidently in love with each other. How can you call that slash?

Henry Jenkins defines slash as a "genre of fan stories positing homoerotic affairs between series protagonists". Which says nothing about the protagonists' sexual orientation prior to the fanfic. But, let's face it, 99% of all slash fiction involves characters that are depicted as heterosexuals in the primary text.

Then there's the fact that Annie Proulx is, by all means, a woman (whether heterosexual and/or lesbian I have no idea), who writes about two men entering a relationship. From the beginning, this struck me as the characteristical slash scenario. And the story does have this otherwordly feeling I so often get when reading slash fanfiction: One true love spanning time and space, seemingly oblivious to the reality of gender divides; one of the heroes emotionally withdrawn, the other outgoing and actively caring; no reference at all to gay politics; and the story holds true to all the prerequisites of romantic fiction. Romantic fiction for women, I should say, because once you've read Hollinghurst's "The Swimming-Pool Library", for example, you know what gay literature feels like, and this ain't it. Therefore, I'm leaning towards calling Proulx' short story slash, for lack of a better word, even if it is in itself a primary text. Slash has definitely reached a main-stream audience. *smiles smugly*

Coining Proulx' story slash answers the question on "Brokeback Mountain" fanfic: If the primary text is already slash, there's no point in claiming the fanfic to be slash. Doesn't make much sense to me.

The much more interesting question, as always, is what writing a slash story tells you about the woman rigging the keypad (and the women divulging the fics). But that's for some other time.

09:18 am - Gay Pleasures
If you haven't already watched "Brokeback Mountain", do so pronto. It's awesome.

I even have a new favourite word: "Hochgebirgsfick", which is the translation of Annie Proulx' "high-altitude fuck" in her short story (this is one very rare occasion where I like the translation better than the original).

To get the saliva running, here be some eye candy from the movie:

Ennis and Jack

And I thought I was over slash ...

09:14 am - Somewhat more cheerful news
Who'd have thought? My workstation at the library has finally entered the 21st century. There's a shiny new PC, keyboard, monitor, the works; responds about a trillion times faster than the old one, and the best thing about it: they've installed Windows XP, including Microsoft Office! Finally I'll be able to get some writing done during my library hours!

The friend I'm staying with at the moment has gotten herself a new boyfriend, who'll be arriving this afternoon. Guess this means I'll be moving back to my appartement ...

Well, I did it. I finally reported my neighbour to the police. For disturbance, breach of domestic peace, and libel. Don't know what the repercussions will be. At the mo, I feel like an amalgamate between

her )

and

him. )

Have taken refuge in a friend's appartement for the time being, and my nerves resemble overcooked spaghetti more than anything else. Heck, I can't even manage a coherent entry. :-(

All in all, this gotta be the worst start to a new year I've ever experienced in my entire life.

Discovered Lost over the X-mas holidays, due to my sister being given the complete first season on DVD. Am completely hooked. Yummy actors. Interesting characters. Great mystery. I'll be redesigning my LJ accordingly over the next few days. ;-)

01:48 pm - Some more horse-ish musings
Horses again ... had much fun on Moli yesterday. I'm falling deeper and deeper for the ponies each time I visit the farm. Right now, I can't imagine ever wanting to ride any other horse than an Iceland pony. And there I was thinking I wouldn't fall in love again. ;-)

I was completely awed how well these ponies are trained: One of the riders actually did fall off during yesterday's lesson (not me ... *wipes sweat off brow*), and the horses all broke out of the trot immediately and halted as one - amazing!

And I do realize I talk of nothing else on my LJ anymore. Well, can't help it at the mo: Real life is busier than usual, and the imminence of Christmas seems to trigger all sorts of breakdowns - from the computer in my office to my granddad's body to a friendship that once seemed hard as rock. The way things are going, I'll be glad when the holiday season is over. :-(

Words can't express how much I enjoy my riding lessons. It's the only time in the week where I forget everything else and actually manage to relax.

Inwardly, that is. On the outside, I'm far too occupied clinging to the horse's back, handling the reins, and desperately trying to do everything else one is supposed to do when riding. ;-) Rode a slightly more "racy" (as the teacher put it) horse called Moli yesterday and was almost thrown off while trotting. But it was fun nonetheless (and a little voice inside my head kept shouting "faster, faster!").

Wish I could go there more often, but unfortunately, my schedule's still mighty tight.

12:05 pm - What's Ailing Me Today ...
... is a problem mankind has been discussing ever since its brains got big enough to conceive the concept of a higher power that transcends our realm of existence. Hence Epicur (excuse the German, I liked this piece way too much to look for an English translation):

Entweder will Gott die Übel beseitigen und kann es nicht:
dann ist Gott schwach, was auf ihn nicht zutrifft,
oder er kann es und will es nicht:
dann ist Gott missgünstig, was ihm fremd ist,
oder er will es nicht und kann es nicht:
dann ist er schwach und missgünstig zugleich, also nicht Gott,
oder er will es und kann es, was allein für Gott ziemt:
Woher kommen dann die Übel und warum nimmt er sie nicht hinweg?

I used to believe I didn't need an answer to this particular problem.

Well, I do.

12:50 pm - New HP movie
I'm really looking forward to the new "Harry Potter" movie. Just read a review of the first screening, and there appears to be a lot of hot Lucius ) in this one.

And here's some Harry and Cedric ) for good measure. (Have I mentioned that I absolutely adore Cedric? He's my favourite-ever HP character, and the scene in the maze when he gives up the Cup to Harry is my favourite-ever part of all HP books put together.)

Plus a scary pic of Harry entering the maze ).

There's a great nude portrayal of Lucius Malfoy lurking on the net, which I don't dare share on my personal LJ. Just try out Google, you'll know which one I mean ...

12:58 pm - New outlook
I've finally found an image that says "Second Troy" to me. Hence the new icon and profile. The picture was taken by Isolde Ohlbaum, who created a whole booklet on erotic graveyard sculptures. A finer testimony to the liaison of eros and thanatos I have yet to see (recommendations are welcome!).

Rode "Krakur" yesterday (which means "crow", incidentally). It was pure joy. Since Krakur is a bit lazy (especially on finding out he's having a not-so-savvy rider crouching on his back), I got to experience "Tölt" (no idea what's that in English, leo won't tell), the Iceland ponies' speciality, which Krakur obviously prefers to trotting. It was like sitting in a comfy armchair, incredible! I'm slowly getting a feel for the horse. Overall, it went so much better than it did two weeks ago. I get the feeling I'll be able to learn how to handle a horse after all!
